Jim Ross wasn’t able to return to his Grilling JR podcast for this week’s episode, but his co-host Conrad Thompson provided an update on the announcing legend’s health.
The 74-year-old Ross announced on October 12 that he had been hospitalized due to having low oxygen. That was because of a chest infection, and Ross has since been discharged from the hospital and is on the mend. However, he’s still feeling a bit under the weather and needed at least one more week off from Grilling JR.
“I finally got an update on the ‘Voice of Wrestling,’ Mr. Jim Ross. As you all know, JR had to do a little outpatient visit recently. And it turns out that he got a bit of a chest cold, he’s got some sort of infection in his chest,” Thompson said. “They said that his oxygen was low, so he spent the night in the hospital, but I’m happy to report that he is home and on the mend.
“They still haven’t gotten his shunt hooked back up yet, so we’re hoping for that sooner rather than later. But at the same time, we’re hoping he gets to feeling better. He’s just under the weather right now. As our pal Jim would say, ‘Hey man, if it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.’ But we’re hoping, knock on wood, that Good Ol’ JR will be back here next week.”
This hospitalization came shortly after Ross underwent brain surgery for the second time. His original operation, where he had the shunt inserted, took place in August. The shunt was helping with Ross’ balance issues, but he started to experience blistering headaches and a CT scan showed bleeding, which necessitated the second operation. Falls were a significant issue for Ross before the shunt was inserted, so he’d like to get things figured out and have the shunt turned back on.
Jim Ross staying grateful amid health challenges —
While it’s been a very difficult time health-wise for Ross, he’s expressed gratitude amid the situation and is hoping to get back to AEW commentary once he’s feeling better. Being in and out of constant doctor’s appointments has shown Ross that, no matter what he’s going through, there is always someone facing a more difficult battle than he is.
“God bless pro wrestling. It means so much to us in our lifetime,” Ross said on a recent episode of Grilling JR. “And for me, the last 51 years, I’ve been immersed and I don’t feel burned out. I feel very blessed, very lucky that I’m still able to put sentences together from time to time.”
Grilling JR’s upload this week is the re-release of an episode where Ross and Thompson discussed the Lethal Lottery from WCW Starrcade 1991.
