We now have some more information regarding the death of Mexican wrestling referee “El Buho” (Gerardo German Pineda).
Pineda passed away last week following an incident where he was given a double underhook piledriver by El Hijo de Fishman during a match. Following the incident, Fishman was arrested but is now free after an agreement where a reported 585,525 pesos (around $30,000) was paid to Pineda’s family. Our Dave Meltzer noted that it’s believed the promotion Patron Espectaculos agreed to pay the money.
According to an autopsy report obtained by journalist Antonio Nieto, a traumatic brain injury is listed as the cause of death:
- According to file 12-2026-12673, the referee died from traumatic brain injury. This caused an edema (fluid in the brain) and a subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding).
- He died between 4 and 12 hours before the autopsy.
El Buho (The Owl), who worked as a referee for decades after previously being a wrestler, was 75 years old at the time of his death. The match in question took place in the city of Mineral de la Reforma in Hidalgo, Mexico.
